Milton was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey in 1919 was raised and educated there, graduating from New Brunswick High School. He chose printing as an occupation. Milt joined our Local in November 1938 and was elected Secretary Treasurer in June of 1946; a career that lasted over 56 years! Milt entered the military service in 1943, and after basic infantry training, was sent to Brisbane, Australia. There he was assigned to Company H, 186th Infantry Regiment, 41st Division. He participated in combat operations throughout New Guinea and the Philippines. Finally on September 1, 1945, His company entered Hiroshima, Japan. This was fifteen days after the atom bomb was dropped. Milt left for home on December 6, 1945 and was discharged on January 11, 1946 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was the recipient of the Combat Infantry Badge with cluster, Good Conduct medal, Asiatic Pacific ribbon with battle stars and bronze arrowheads, Philippine Liberation ribbon with combat stars, Japanese occupation ribbon and Victory medal. As Milt related so many times, the following was one specific incident he never forgot. At the battle of Biak in New Guinea, his company was attacking a ridge in order to secure an airstrip on the other side. The Japanese were dug in and the Americans were suffering heavy losses. The company commander then informed the regimental colonel of the situation. The colonel's orders were-"Move forward at all costs. We didn't come thousands of miles to retreat!" In 1940 Milton married Pauline Plaganis. They were blessed with two children, Elaine and Dean, and four grandchildren. Milt was also very active at the Saint George Greek Orthodox Church in Piscataway, NJ on all committees and offices. Milt was awarded a service plaque by the Community. He was also the Director of the Greek School and was honored by the PTO for his devotion to the education of the children of the Community in the Greek language and their heritage. In addtion to Milt's already busy life, he was an active member of Monroe Chapter #75 of the Order of Ahepa serving in all chapter and district offices as well as District Governor in 1953-54. He was active in the American legion Post #88, St George Senior Citizens, Past District Governor's Club, and the Advisory Council in the Graphic Arts Department of the Middlesex County Vocational Schools. |
